(Recovering from) Gabe’s Birthday Weekend

On Saturday morning Tim, Gabe and I drove up to my Mom’s house – a three hour drive which Gabe normally hates. This time he was smiling and happy when he wasn’t sleeping, so we took that as a sign that he really likes his new toddler car seat.

After saying our hellos, Tim and my little brother Daniel said some good bye’s and headed out to the “80” – a parcel of wooded land that Tim’s family owns and hunts on. They are getting excited about this year’s hunting season, especially since it will be Daniel’s very first time hunting. Tim mentioned to me afterwards that he was really impressed with how accurate and consistent a shot Daniel is,… he thinks that Daniel has a really good chance to “bag a buck” this year!

While the boys were shooting and planning, I was at Mom’s house playing with puppies and visiting. My mom’s dogs, Sweet Pea and Paco, had the cutest puppies and so Gabe got to play with some other babies. He’s comfortable around Shaun’s dog, Mia, but he didn’t like the chewing and scratching of the puppies,… I guess he didn’t like to be on the receiving end of it!

On Sunday we prepared for Gabe’s “official” birthday party, which seemed to be a great time and fun for all! My brother Tom brought some appetizers from Grazies, my sister Becca made fruit pizza from a recipe she’d learned at school, and Tim made balloons. (If you want a chuckle, check out the YouTube video posted below – it shows Gabe really getting a kick out of his balloons.)

The party went great and it was so much fun to see people from back home. I only wish that we could have invited more people, since we had to keep it small because my mom’s house isn’t very big. Even the heat didn’t stop the fun!

We had to leave later in the afternoon because we had the long drive back to Platteville. It wasn’t until we were south of Madison (but north of Dodgeville) that we had a big scare – we almost hit a deer! Tim noticed it was a 4-point buck,… I just noticed it was a big brown blur right in front of our vehicle! We were tossed about a little bit, but Tim managed to stop the van quick enough to avoid an accident. The worst things we dealt with were seriously shaken nerves, some spilled bruschetta, and a lightly-sprained wrist (mine). I’m just glad we made it home safe!
